Thieving squatters!!

Well the City of Calgary keeps giving them inches and the squatters keep taking miles (as can be expected).

Despite every other major city in Canada having gotten rid of their squatters (with no Charter problems), Calgary officials are still completely terrified to enforce our bylaws.

Well, emboldened by the lawless state that the city has granted them the “occupy” Calgary squatters have now taken to stealing our electricity.

In the discussion from their facebook site below, we can see them happily bragging that they now have hotplates and heat in their little illegal camp in Olympic Plaza.

The squatters destroy the bathroom at Olympic Plaza, the City gives them porta-potties on the taxpayers (though the squatters still poop on the ground).

Now things are getting cool out, so the city is turning a blind eye while the squatters steal electricity from us.

How much was your electric bill last month? Perhaps you should send it to Nenshi and say you are expressing yourself thus are entitled to free power on the taxpayers.

We won’t enforce bylaws. How about criminal laws then? Theft is still a crime is it not?

Just because it is there, it does not mean that one can simply take it. By that logic they can begin to steal and sell park benches and other fixtures simply because they were not fastened down securely enough.

In the discussion below, it can be seen that a couple of them understand that this is wrong. Most appear happy to continue to steal from Calgary taxpayers however and clearly will continue to do so until the law is enforced. That is the nature of their blind entitlement.

It can be seen in this discussion that the squatters had already had one problem when they tried to steal power from Teatro restaurant before.

Is it enough for law enforcement to move in yet Nenshi? Chief Hanson? Do they have to begin stealing from our very houses next?

The transcript below is directly quoted from the Occupy Calgary Facebook organizational site.

?Christopher Fox McMillan, officers of both cps and bylaw have seen us using it and said nothing of the like. As well, 95% of the city’s electricity comes from wind farming south of the city.. and being that we are taxpaying citizens of said city we are well within our rights to use what’s there.. it would be absolutely stupid not too.

?+ they can’t file ANY new evidence on damages and costs because the matter is already been filed.. so chances are they will simply just say whatever.. they aren’t bothering us at all anymore because they’re sure we’re out on friday.. enjoy the moment.

Exactly, Henyk. to finally have some human rights to running water in the bathrooms during park hours, power for heaters & cooking fresh food & keeping surfaces disinfected w/hot water & bleach is a MIRACLE.

Please don’t rain on our parade today.

People @ camp deserve a break.

i Love You, my dear occu-sisters, occu-brothers, occu-lovers & occu-haters. 😉 sick in bed today & i miss You all very much.

I am glad we now have access to electricity thats excellent. but when people looking from the outside see us taking electricity which we aren’t paying for when we have the ability to do gives credence to their calls of get the thieving hippies out. It puts truth to their words that we are costing them money, and it feeds into the negative feedback loop that is our critics. I don’t want to give them any more firepower than they already have

Electricity is not free, it takes things to produce (whether it be windmills or dead dinosaur plants), and those things cost money.

agreed, the electricity is *not* free, I will not be party to theft, even from the City. So far Occupy has done nothing illegal, just civil disobedience. I think it will just rub salt into open sores. Beautifying can be done with more coloured ice, flowers, sparkly garlands and cards and notes…etc… coming down (hugs)

Surreptitious use to charge phones or to boil some tea would be probably be okay, but setting up a Christmas display might be pushing it somewhat.

I suggest not using it unless you have permission from the City. They may need electricity there at this time, however, they may be setting you all up for more trouble.

  1. “To finally have some human rights…” Are You kidding me? Human Rights?
I am enraged by that statement… More enraged than from freeloading malcontents stealing power or our elected civic government not being accountable for our tax dollars! ENRAGED! WTF is wrong here?

  2. My Enmax (City of Calgary municipal government by any other name) bill edges up close to 200 dollars a months. and I’m one person living alone. Besides the cost for power the endless rate riders and mind boggling municipal fees, the taxes and the taxes disguised as fees and the regular ceaseless increases of new fees and taxes from city hall, not to mention the cost of power increases caused by the Alberta government and now thieving entitled hippies I might as well go file a police report because us law abiding tax payers are getting robbed.

  3. I would love to go down there and cut every extension cord I can find running into their little shantytown, but I’m sure that I’d be charged with destruction of property, and somehow I doubt that I could get away with claiming that I was exercizing my Charter rights.

  4. The parts of this I find the worst are that A) They compared their movement to the solidarity shown in Arab Spring and B) That they are calling running water, electricity and cleanliness human rights. Just another example of how we first worlders don’t understand how lucky we are. There are thousands of people in third world countries who do not have these ‘human rights’, and are lucky if they get even the most basic of actual human rights at all which include genuine needs to LIVE. So frustrating.

  5. Hey Everyone.. glad I could brighten all your day will some misinformation.. We had electricity just long enough to plug in some christmas lights for our christmas tree. The power was turned on for the whole park but once the city realized that we at Occupy would get some benefit from it, they shut it off.. It is a shame that many of the worlds people don’t have access to the things we in Canada take for granted on a daily basis and comments like, “My power bill is $200 and I live alone” only make me think of the absurd amount of wastage that takes place right here in our free nation. The fact is, at no point have we impeded any activity at the park as we take up less than 8% of usable space, We’ve saved the lives of two eople, one from a late night stabbing and the other a fire set by an attemt to stay warm, we’ve made it a safer place at night, and the city has given us nothing that wasn’t already part of the Olympic Plaza experience. The porta-potties are there because the bathrooms were closed for repair. They were not given to Occupy but instead to the whole of the city who uses the park.

A discussion has been created on both side of the street and thusly Occupy Calgary has achieved one of it’s goals. Thank you all, including my friend Cory Morgan for helping to do that. Now if can get past the tenting issue and on to fixing the problems that make life for the 7 billion humans on this wonderful planet unsustainable we will all get to share in that sense of accomplishment.

    Namaste and good day.

  6. Are you serious Henyk? I’ve read about failed propaganda attempts before, specifically from the Iraqi Information Minister, but you my friend just totally moved him into second place.

We know that you were using electricity to power hotplates, laptops and charge cellphones, you’re group admitted it in your facebook page. And the power is turned on for the cities decorations not to power you’re corporately created devices and for the comfort of a bunch of squatters. You’re not protestors, you live in a hobo village and you’re squatters. That city is not free for you’re use to power you’re appliances, if you want to live in the park and have power then pay event rates for the park and pay for the electricity, like the Muslim festival who rented the whole part and you couldn’t have the common courtesy to let them use it.

I find it highly hypocritical that you’re complaining about a person that pays for their housing and electricity when the only thing that we hear from you’re group is that you want everything for free, condoms, electricity, meeting spaces, AV equipment. And don’t deny that you want these things its on you’re site. Besides who do you think would pay for you’re free stuff if it was granted? That’s right the 99% in this city would bear the burden of it? Who in the heck do you represent anyways, because you don’t represent all of the 99%?

You’ve impeded the park with the smell of dope, you’ve impeded the park with you’re tents in public spaces, with the damage to the grass, with the poop in the grass. It doesn’t matter if you take up 8% or 80%, you’re squatters, and no one wants to hang out in a park with squatters, you’re right to assemble does not include the right to set up tents and camp, every court decision that again you forced at taxpayers expense has plainly stated that. Assemble all you want, sit around and meditate and do you’re spirit fingers, but quit squatting.

You haven’t saved two lives, the stabbing happened because those people were drawn to you’re event, the person got burned because he took a candle into a tent that shouldn’t have been there. You claiming that you’re group saves lives is like me throwing a kid under a bus then giving him mouth to mouth and claiming I’m a hero.

You haven’t made it safer at night, thats obvious by the fact that EMS had to be called to the scene because some idiot set himself on fire, and its the patrols that make the park safe, not you guys.

The bathrooms were closed for repairs because you’re group damaged them? Did you’re group pay for repairs and the porta-potties, or was it the other 99% that pays municipal taxes? Again thanks for ripping me off.

You can’t create discussion if you have no clue what you’re protesting and no knowledge about the thing that you’re protesting. The only discussion that’s happened is the overwhelming desire to see the mayor finish off you’re movement, hopefully you’re court date on Friday will finally set things straight. But please clean up you’re mess on the way out, pay you’re fines and go about you’re life.

I get the occupy movement in the States, I get the anger in the States, and while there’s some trouble in Canada, we currently have one of the best economies in the world, good employment figures, and some of the best social programs in the country. Despite what you’re groups believe there were no bank bailouts, and the bailout to the car companies in Canada not only saved jobs but the funds were paid back.

If you want to support OWS, please pack up you’re tents and go there.

I would wish you a good day, but I won’t I wish that instead you have a good journey, out of the park.
